Espresso and walnut sponges, coffee buttercream frosting — old-fashioned perfection. This is rather nice with a deep-toned, masculine brew for teatime, in other words: coffee upon coffee with coffee for tea.
This cake is best eaten on the day it is collected, and will behave at room temperature for the best part of an afternoon as long as it is kept in a cool place. In the fridge, it will keep for two days, in which case you should remove it approximately 20 – 30 minutes before you wish to serve.
